Thomin était ingénieur en optique, il fabriquait et commercialisait toutes sortes d'objets d'optique (lunettes, télescopes, miroirs, microscopes, lanternes magiques .) dont le détail figure à la fin de son livre p.345 à 348. Il y décrit soigneusement les techniques pour tailler et polir les verres, fabriquer toutes sortes de télescopes, microscopes et autres lanternes magiques. Son traité lui attira la renommée, et il fut protégé par le chancelier d'Aguesseau et a Reine Marie Leczinska. C'est un des meilleurs traités d'optique appliquée de son époque, avec une importante partie sur l'usage et la fabrication des lunettes et des verres de couleur.
