Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book contains the extraordinary correspondence of Gustavus Vasa Fox during his time as Assistant Secretary of the Navy, a period which saw the outbreak of the American Civil War and some of the first naval battles of the conflict. Born in Saugus, Massachusetts, and an 1840 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Fox had risen through the ranks before being appointed to this position by President Abraham Lincoln in 1861. Tasked with planning and executing secret operations, including the notorious but failed 1861 attempt to relieve Union forces at Fort Sumter, Fox's letters here reveal the inner workings of the U.S. Navy during this tumultuous time, with all its complexities, rivalries, and ultimate heroism. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item. …
