Hard Cover. First Edition. First UK Edition, First Printing. Publisher's brown boards lettered in gilt to the spine. Boards bright and clean. No previous owner's inscriptions. A VG++ copy with a bookseller's ticket to the front paste-down and an attractive book-plate to the verso of the title page. Very slight pushing (hardly worth mentioning) at the head and tail of the spine. No dustwrapper but certainly good enough to take one. NB: Edward Ashdown Bunyard (18781939) was England's foremost pomologist (student of apples) and a significant gastronome and epicure in the 1920's and 30's. He wrote three books of national significance: A Handbook of Hardy Fruits (192025), The Anatomy of Dessert (1929), and The Epicure's Companion (1937, edited with his sister, Lorna). His family was the owner of one of England's most significant fruit nurseries, founded in 1796 in Kent. In his written work, Bunyard was important for his trenchant and enlightening explication of the charm of apples, surely England's most noble garden product, as well as pears and other fruits. Bunyard's life ended tragically with his suicide in 1939. Photographs/scans available upon request.

First Edition. (London: The Thomson Organisation Limited 1961). First UK Edition. Glazed white covers, with black lettering to spine title embossed on front board. Unpaginated, though 48 pages. Profusely illustrated, with much in color. Small folio. In 1959, Thomson purchased the Kemsley group of newspapers, the largest in Britain, which included The Sunday Times. Over the years, Thomson expanded his media empire to include more than 200 newspapers in Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom. His Thomson Organization became a multinational corporation, with interests in publishing, printing, television, and travel. The purpose of this book was to expound on how the Sunday Times go about producing its weekly newspaper. with chapters on: Planning the Paper; Collecting the News; The Foreign Department; Sports and Sportsmen; The Sunday Times City Office; Views and News; Serials; Critics of the Arts; The Literary Pages; Mainly for Women; For Sunday Relaxation; Travel and Holidays; Printing the Paper; Make-Up and Typography; Circulation; Advertising; The Future of the Sunday Times. Ian Fleming was, of course, Foreign Manager at the former Kemsley Newspaper. He features in an image of the key executives of the Sunday Times attending a meeting in the Chairman's Room (attended also by, inter alia, C. D. Hamilton (Editorial Director). Fleming appears also in the Serials section with a image from his his article on Hong Kong as part of his serialisation of "The World's Most Thrilling Cities". This is a near fine copy with a small split in the laminate at the right hand edge of the spine towards the base. NB: it is our understanding that this was an in-house publication by the Thomson Organisation and was never offered for sale to the General Public (hence why it is uncommon. From the collection of Miss Grace Pugh who worked for forty four years with The Sunday Times as secretary to three successive editors. Laid into the book are a number of hand-written letters to Miss Pugh (including 5 from English poet, writer and important and influential critic, Edmund Gosse) and a separate letter (dated 26: viii: 1929) from Leonard Rees (Editor of the Sunday Times from 1901 to 1932). There is a hand-written letter enclosed from Mary Emily Macleod Rees (wife of Leonard Rees) wishing Miss Pugh "good wishes for a long and happy married life". Photographs/scans available upon request.
