Bereits im Mittelalter und dann in der Frühen Neuzeit erfuhr das Werk weiteste Verbreitung. Guigo hat diese Art der Schriftlesung in verstä…ndlicher Weise systematisiert mit Hilfe des traditionellen Schemas lectio - meditatio - oratio - contemplatio. Trotz der eminenten Bedeutung der Schrift existierte bisher nur eine neuere deutsche Übersetzung im Anhang zum leider schon seit längerer Zeit vergriffenen Büchlein von Enzo Bianchi 'Dich finden in deinem Wort' (Freiburg 1988, Neuausgabe Eichstätt 1997), einem weiteren Klassiker zur lectio divina. Diese Übersetzung war auch abgedruckt in der ebenfalls vergriffenen Kartäuseranthologie 'Gott schauen' (hg. v. G. di Lorenzi, Würzburg 1996). Umso verdienstvoller ist es, dass der Siegburger Benediktiner Daniel Tibi mit der vorliegenden Schrift eine aktuell zugängliche Übersetzung vorlegt. Bedauerlicherweise verwendete er als lateinische Vorlage die alte Migne-Ausgabe (PL 184, 475-484) statt des heute gültigen Texts in den Sources Chretiennes (SChr 163, ed. Edmund Colledge / James Walsh. Paris 1970).Seiner Übersetzung schickt Tibi eine ausführliche Einleitung voraus, die in überarbeiteter Form auch in der Zeitschrift Geist und Leben 83 (2010), 222-234, erschien. Kundig erschließt Tibi im Rückgriff auf die Väter und auf zeitgenössische Autoren die lectio divina für einen heutigen Christen. Zugleich macht er mit den wesentlichen Inhalten der Schrift Guigos vertraut. Dieser möchte in seinem Brief an den Mitbruder Gervasius (evtl. Prior der Kartause Mont-Dieu) 'einige Gedanken über die geistlichen Übungen der Mönche' mitteilen und sie dessen kritischem Urteil unterbreiten. Letzteres tut Guigo, weil er die geistlichen Übungen 'nur durch Nachdenken (kenne), du aber aus Erfahrung'. Diese Übersetzung verfälscht den Text (Übersetzung bei Bianchi: 'du kennst sie mehr aus der Erfahrung als ich durch Nachdenken'), wird aber vor allem dem Charakter der Schrift nicht gerecht. Denn der Brief Guigos liest sich gerade deshalb auch heute mit besonderem Gewinn, weil der Autor nicht nur über die lectio schreibt, sondern das Geschehen der lectio zugleich vorführt. Er tut dies anhand der Betrachtung eines für geistliches Leben zentralen Verses aus der Bergpredigt: 'Selig, die reinen Herzens sind, denn sie werden Gott schauen.' (Mt 5,8)Eine fruchtbare Lektüre der kurzen Schrift Guigos erfordert sorgfältiges, meditierendes Lesen. Diese Lektüre sollte in keinem Noviziatsunterricht fehlen.
