Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the origins and evolution of the local governing body in Vendome, France. The author traces the community's development from its medieval roots through the tumultuous 16th and 17th centuries and into the relatively modern era of the 18th century. Though in its early years the community was largely at the mercy of their feudal overlords, over time, the townspeople were able to negotiate a degree of independence and self-governance. At the core of this was the establishment of a municipal council consisting of four à chevins, a procureur syndic, a town clerk, and a receiver, who were elected by the townspeople and overseen by the local Bailiff. Through detailed analysis of archival records, the author sheds light on the evolving role of this council and its significance in the daily life of the community. The book offers valuable insights into the complex relationship between feudal authority and communal autonomy in pre-revolutionary France.
