Hardback. Zustand: Very Good Plus. First Edition. 1928. First UK edition. vii, [i], 250pp., a frontispiece and 7 other black and white plates. From 1573 to 1617, Master Franz Schmidt was the executioner for the towns of Bamberg and Nuremberg. During that span, he personally executed more than 350 people while keeping a journal throughout his career. 'A Hangman's Diary' gives a year-by-year breakdown on all of Master Franz Schmidt's executions, which included hangings, beheadings, and other methods, as well as details of each capital crime and the reason for the punishment. The Diary is preceded by a brief account of criminal procedure in Germany in the Middle Ages by C. Calvert and an introduction to Schmidt's diary by Albrecht Keller. The book is bound in the original blue cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some light soiling to the boards and bumping to the spine ends. The contents are tight and clean with slight browning to the free endpapers and a name and date (1928) written in pencil on the front free endpaper.

Hard Cover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. First American Edition. A Roman Catholic priest and scholarly philologist, Father Schmidt trained Catholic missionaries to gather linguistic & cultural data from the peoples in whose culture they were embedded, founding the journal and institute Anthropos to publish & research their findings & his theories. He wrote extensively on linguistics, and turned later in his career to ethnology, partly to promote his idea that all peoples are essentially monotheistic, in accord with Biblical revelation. Deeply influenced by Frobenius and Graebner, he here presents the history & technique of German & Austrian ethnology, contrasting it with the practice of the discipline in North America and the rest of Europe; he goes on to discuss the meaning & interpretation of sources, cultural relations, culture circles & strata, development & causality, and related ideas. Though little or poorly-remembered today, partly due to modern concerns about his biases, Schmidt was arguably the foremost Catholic ethnographer of the first half of the twentieth century. Hardcover in jacket, as pictured; stated first edition (first printing). Light wear to book, corners bumped; ink name & date on first endsheet; jacket tanned & lightly rubbed with minor creasing, scuffs, light chipping, $5.00 price intact. Text clean; xxx, 383 pages; glossary, indexes, introduction by Harvard anthropologist Clyde Kluckhohn, once a student of Schmidt's. Size: Large Octavo.
