Inscribed by Turner to Deborah [Evetts] and dated in 2000 on the first page. First edition. Interesting copy of Charles W. Ferguson's (1901-1987) first book, an overview of the sects, cults, and other branches of the religious scene of the time. Includes the theosophy of Blavatsky, Mormonism, Swedenborgianism, Swamis and Yogis, Shakerism, The House of David, The Maid of Angelus, and many others. This copy signed by Ferguson and additionally signed by Charles E. Selecman (1874-1958), president of the author's alma mater, Southern Methodist University. Ferguson was assistant editor ofThe Bookmanand religious editor at Doubleday, Doran at the time of publication. The letter to Bridwell Library director, Decherd Turner, discusses a recent visit by Ferguson, and the presentation of a copy of The Koran by a "Henderson," which was subsequently sent to Sotheby's for valuation. A wonderful copy, uncommon signed, with several great connections to SMU. 8vo, 464pp. Dictionary of sects, index at rear. Signed by Ferguson and Charles E. Selecman on the ffep. Laid in is a typed letter signed to Decherd Turner from Ferguson and dated in 1970. Maroon cloth boards ruled and lettered in gilt. Some rubbing to front cover, darkening to spine. A near fine copy.

One of 225 copies. 4to., 38pp. Finely bound by James and Stuart Brockman in full vellum, upper cover tooled in gilt with repeat pattern of open book tool and floral starbust centered with circle of goatskin onlay within a lozenge outlined in wide gilt rules, several horizontal gilt and black rules, calligraphic spine title, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers by Louise Brockman, with original velvet lined, buckram box with gold lettering label. Boston, Anne and David Bromer. Fine.  A beautiful example of a binding by father and son James and Stuart Brockman. 'The design is based on the shape of the colophon with a specially made "open book" intaglio tool and a small scroll tool used to accentuate the rays radiating from the red onlays in the design.' .
