Hardcover. Zustand: New. From the preface : "Erstwhile Bihar, lying close to the foot hills of Nepal and covering an area of 1,73,877 sq km, harbours a very rich and diverse flora. Its unique phytogeographical position, topography and good precipitation are some of the important factors which are mainly responsible for high degree of plant diversity. The occurrence of different types of forests, ranging from subtropical to tropical and consequently the establishment of three National Parks and twenty Wildlife sanctuaries in the state, which constitute an important source of germplasm, are of considerable interest. Although the state has been botanically surveyed since 1848 and the Flora was published during 1921-1925 which included Bihar, Orissa and parts of West Bengal, but the complete Flora of Bihar itself is not in hand. Simultaneously, the natural vegetation since Haines' publication has been continuously and increasingly under pressure owing to developmental projects including mining activities and non-judicious exploitation of plant resources. These reasons coupled with the publication of a number of new plant records for the state warrant the need of fresh estimation of current status of floristic account n the state. The present work is an attempt in this direction to provide the status of the Flora of the state. It is hoped that this publication will be highly helpful to the botanists, especially taxonomists, environmentalists, foresters, agriculturists, horticulturists, pharmacologists and planners in their research and management programmes. 777 pp.

From the introduction: "Ethnobotany of Totopara" is a descriptive ethnomedicinal account of a very small Mongoloid tribe known as "Toto". The Totos are living in Totopara which is situated in the extreme north-east part of Jalpaiguri district in West Bengal. The authors took extensive field studies during 1995 to 1997 at Totopara and the present account is the outcome of those field studies. Until a few years ago, the Totos were unknown to the outside world. They used to hold their indigenous culture. Now-a-days some of these tribal people have undergone minor changes in their livelihood and culture. In this present account, some plants used in medicine and other purposes by this tribal community, have been discussed which may help the readers to get an idea about the plant species used by this tribal community to prevent and cure their illness. Moreover, the studies unfolded the similarities of usages of plant species between the.

From the preface: During the last ten years many books have come up to serve as text books or guides for concept scope methodology and practical utility of ethnobotany. Almost all of them are by authors who live in developed countries but have worked in far off locations and among technologically less developed people very different from their own traditions language and culture. Thus, many concepts suggestions for estabilishing communication with the indigenous people infrastructual and transport facilities and even financial or other resources available to them do not always match or suit on the ground situation in India. This handbook draws from the personal experience of authors over three decades (ca five decades for SKJ) and of course on the useful and relevant published material particularly the lectures given during training courses organised by society of ethnobotanists.
