Garrison-Morton 4498: "Charcot and Cornil gave an important description of the renal lesions in gout." "Charcot and Cornil, in reporting an autopsy of an eighty-four-year-old woman, obviously gouty, paid special attention to the kidneys. These organs were small and granular with adherent capsules. In addition to other lesions there were white linear deposits of urates in the tubules. They point out that there are two forms of renal lesion in gout: (1) those of ordinary Bright's disease and (2) incrustations of uric acid" (Bloomfield, Bibliography of Internal Medicine, Selected Diseases, p. 232). Charcot's doctoral, or inaugural, thesis in 1853 was on gout and rheumatoid arthritis. "His major source was his own research, specifically the female patients he had studied at the Salpêtrière during his stage of internship there the previous year. The thesis, based on the study of 41 hospital case histories, in fact inaugurated Charcot's future career in several important respects, notably in its subject and its general approach to medical problems. Gout and arthritic diseases remained central to Charcot's research during the ensuing decade and beyond. In 1866, when he first applied for a professorship, Charcot's reputation as an original investigator still rested heavily on this vein of work" (Goetz et al., Charcot, Constructing Neurology, p. 32). Cornil, who in 1863 was Charcot's second intern, recalled their collaboration: "Surely, of my formative years scientifically and personally, this year was my happiest and richest. Dr. Charcot had opened and was beginning to exploit this inexhaustible mine of pathologic research at the Salpêtrière. Just as in a mine, these incurable, chronic illnesses . . . were layered in veins and had not yet revealed their secrets. Charcot was first to arrive each day, the work rounds lasted until late, and were even later when there were autopsies. Few students understood what was involved in this obstinately disciplined work that was so interesting, so fascinating for the intern directly involved with it. The externs abandoned us, and the service was therefore almost always run with the intern face to face with his chief" (Cornil, 1892, quoted in Goetz et al., ibid., p. 84).…
