Five neo-classical studies reflecting the wide range of interests of the celebrated Flemish humanist Joest Lips (1547-1606), who initiated the renewed study of Roman military methods in the Netherlands. The essay on the Greatness of Rome in dialogue form contains several chapters of military interest: book 2, ch.10 on the public expenses of maintaining an army, book 4, ch. 3 on justice and clemency in war, and book 4, ch. 4 on the strength of the Roman army. The treatise on public spectacles or gladiatorial games remains a valuable source for our knowledge of ancient combat. The evocative engraved illustrations by Otto Vaenius (1556-1629), a teacher of Rubens, include: folding plates showing 'meridiani' armed with swords only fighting at a banquet for the entertainment of guests, gladiators performing at a funeral, sham-fighting with wooden staves and fighting to the death with swords in an amphitheatre; half-page engravings depicting a variety of combats: women and dwarfs (favoured by the emperor Domitian), a 'retirarius' or net fighter armed with a trident against a 'secutor' or heavily armed swordsman, a 'mirmillon' with helmet, shield and sword against a Thracian with buckler and curved dagger, a Samnite with body amour, oblong shield and short sword, essedarians throwing javelins from chariots, 'andabatae' or horsemen with closed helmets and spears, 'dimachaeri' with swords in both hands, 'lacearii' with lasso and sword, 'postulaticii' or heavily armed prize fighters who made only special appearances, and 'catervarii' who fought in bands. Depuis quelques décennies, le regain des études emblématiques a remis à l'honneur ses recueils à succès : Emblemata Horatiana, Amorum Emblemata et Amoris Divini Emblemata. Mais certains de ses ouvrages plus confidentiels restent encore largement méconnus. Tel est le cas des Physicae et theologicae conclusiones (1621), un petit opuscule d'une vingtaine de pages publié dans des circonstances mystérieuses, qui se propose rien moins que de résoudre « par des notes et des figures » le problème de la prédestination et du libre arbitre un sujet alors brûlant, qui a d'ailleurs valu à l'auteur des problèmes avec l'Inquisition. Mais l'intérêt de l'opuscule va bien au-delà de l'enjeu théologique : par l'invention d'un langage visuel inédit et déroutant (à mi-chemin entre le géométrique et le figuratif, entre le diagramme et l'emblème), ainsi que par plusieurs chapitres explicitement consacrés aux pouvoirs des images et de l'imagination, l'ouvrage offre une étonnante clé de lecture à l'ensemble de l'uvre de Vaenius, et constitue en même temps un témoignage frappant de la créativité d'une époque en pleine mutation épistémologique. The Dutch verses are by A. Jansen van Ter Goes. Van Veen had studied for seven years under Federigo Zuccari at Rome. Settling in Antwerp in 1593, he began painting for the churches and public buildings, and for several years, from 1596 to 1600, numbered Rubens among his pupils. His work attracted the admiration and patronage of the Archduke Albert, who succeeded the Prince of Parma in the government of the Low Countries. Tempesta. De platen van Antonio Tempesta (1555-1630) tonen de gevechten tussen de Hollanders en de Romeinen, gebaseerd op de verhalen van Tacitus. Plaat 1 is gedateerd 1611. De achterzijden van de 36 prenten zijn blanco. Er bestaan ook edities waarbij de tekst van Van Veen op de achterzijden van de prenten is gedrukt. De prenten in dit exemplaar zijn goed van druk. De beelden tonen iconische momenten van de opstand zoals Civilis die het land onder water laat lopen, een bekende tactiek van de Bataven onder leiding van Julius Civilis, om te Romeinen tegen te houden. De tekst is grotendeels gebaseerd op Tacitus' Histories. De Bataafse opstand (Revolt of the Batavi) speelde zich af in het gebied dat nu Nederland is, De Lage Landen met name in de provincie Germania Inferior, in de jaren 69-70 na Christus. Julius Civilis speelde een centrale rol, als leider van de opstand. De opstand begon met kleine provocaties en escaleerde, mede onder invloed van de onrust binnen het Romeinse rijk (het "Vierkeizerjaar" 69 n.C.), en de afname van centrale controle. De prentenserie werd gebruikt in latere eeuwen als inspiratie voor kunstenaars, toneelstukken, poëzie, etc. Bijvoorbeeld Vondel gebruikte Van Veen's werk als bron voor zijn tragedie De Batavische Gebroeders. Erste Ausgabe eines der schönsten und erfolgreichsten Emblembücher des Frühbarock. Die reizenden, fast ganzseitigen ovalen Kupfer zeigen jeweils eine oder zwei Amorgestalten bei der Ausübung ihrer Tätigkeiten, die jeweils Liebesweisheiten versinnbildlichen, die dann im Text der Folgeseite erläutert werden. Das schöne Eingangskupfer zeigt Venus und Cupido in ihrem Wagen auf einer Wolke schwebend, darunter die von Cupidos Pfeilen getroffenen irdischen Geschöpfe. Rare first edition of this famous emblem book by Dutch poet Anthoni Jansen, based on the Antwerp 1607 Latin text edition of Otto van Veen's enduringly popular Quinti Horatii Flacci Emblemata, illustrating the poems of Horace, with verses in Dutch, Latin, and French. This emblematical work by Van Veen constituted a significant development in the design and conceptualization of emblem books as well as the optimization of their didactic impact. By transposing the works of the Roman poet Horace into innovative images through prints of a high technical quality the work could be used for philosophical and moral meditation. Van Veen was a painter, draughtsman and humanist, primarily active in Antwerp and Brussels. He is known for his paintings of religious and mythological scenes, allegories and portraits, which he produced in his large workshop in Antwerp, where from 1594 or 1595 to 1598 he was amongst others the teacher of Peter Paul Rubens and proved himself influential as an educated humanist artist (doctor pictus) on Rubens.
