Sonhos em série: arquitetura e pré-fabricação nas margens do capitalismo é uma coleção de ensaios que investiga a pré-fabricação desde o pós-Segunda Guerra Mundial, período em que essa abordagem ganhou imensa visibilidade. Naquela época, o discurso da pré-fabricação prometia resolver o problema habitacional "em todos os mundos": nos países centrais, no bloco soviético e nos países subdesenvolvidos. O livro originou-se de uma feliz coincidência. Jonathan Charley e Clécio Magalhães haviam se juntado ao Grupo de Pesquisa MOM um como professor visitante; o outro como pós-doutorando , ao mesmo tempo em que Sergio Ekerman e José Baravelli estavam envolvidos no projeto Translating Ferro/ Transforming Knowledges, também em parceria com o MOM. Esse encontro, que uniu as diversas perspectivas sobre o tema, desdobrou-se primeiro no seminário Pré-fabricação: da genealogia à economia política e, em seguida, na publicação deste livro. Essa retomada foi motivada pela constatação de similitudes entre o entusiasmo com a pré-fabricação no pós-guerra e o entusiasmo atual em torno da revolução nos métodos de projeto e construção (CAD, BIM e outros acrônimos). Novamente, a tecnologia é propagandeada como uma suposta solução para as contradições socioespaciais em toda parte. Nesse sentido, as hipóteses levantadas pelas discussões sobre a pré-fabricação despertam um interesse mais amplo, conectando-se a questões que atravessam o nosso presente. "As novas tecnologias podem ajudar na produção e na coordenação de um tal contexto produtivo, mas elas não são imprescindíveis nem farão milagres. Da pré-fabricação em taipa às miniusinas de Lelé, várias das iniciativas discutidas aqui contêm outras inspirações e pistas valiosas.
