Feminary began in 1969, originally named the Female Liberation Newsletter of Durham, N.C. It was founded by a collective of feminists in the area. Originally the magazine explored feminist issues that intersected with lesbian issues, especially focusing on working class women. After a brief hiatus in 1972, the magazine started publishing again in 1973, and by 1978 had rebranded itself as a magazine focusing on lesbian issues. It ceased publishing in 1982.
