La riflessione epistemologica contemporanea mostra come, all'interno delle scienze, il peso teoretico dell'agire sia notevolmente cresciuto: l'azione non è più il precipitato, più o meno adeguato, più o meno coerente, di un modello teorico che lo controlla, ma il nucleo stesso dell'elaborazione teorica. Non solo l'azione è conoscenza, come teoria incarnata, ma ne è l'inizio, il cominciamento. Ciò pone l'agire in primo piano, non solo come fine dell'intero processo, ma come suo inizio, talvolta imponderabile.Sul piano del mondo della vita l'agire si rivela il nucleo dell'umano, il manifestarsi dell'uomo all'altro uomo - e, quindi, a se stesso -; l'agire è il terreno dell'imprevedibilità che sostanzia l'esistenza. Questo ribaltamento, del quale si seguiranno le tracce, appare come estremamente fecondo per la pedagogia, scienza che da sempre ha dovuto fare i conti con la problematicità, la complessità e, in definitiva, con l'indeterminabilità dell'agire.
