Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book chronicles the conflicted relationship between the Protestant Swiss cantons of Zürich and Bern and the Catholic cantons of the Swiss confederation. In the aftermath of several brutal religious wars, the Protestants had emerged victorious, leaving the Catholic cantons chafing under Protestant domination. Driven by ambition, Louis XIV of France began encouraging and supporting the Catholic cantons in an effort to reassert Catholic influence in the region. The author provides detailed accounts of diplomatic maneuvering, secret alliances, and military preparations as the two sides maneuvered for advantage. Ultimately, the author argues that the threat posed by Louis XIV's expansionist ambitions led to a rebalancing of power within Switzerland, with the Protestant cantons grudgingly recognizing the need to accommodate the legitimate grievances of the Catholic cantons. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in the complex interplay of religion, politics, and international relations in early modern Europe.
