Il était considéré comme le meilleur historien français de son époque, grâce à une Histoire de France qui a été très lue dès sa parution (1643-1651). Il s'est aussi imposé comme l'un des membres les plus influents de la jeune Académie française. Élu en 1648 pour remplacer Voiture, il a succédé en 1650 à Vaugelas comme responsable du Dictionnaire de la langue française préparé par l'Académie ; il est devenu en 1675 Secrétaire perpétuel de la compagnie et le restera jusqu'à sa mort. Protégé d'abord par le cardinal de Richelieu et par le chancelier Séguier, il a été nommé par Louis XIV "historiographe de France" (1657). Il est tombé en disgrâce quand le ministre Colbert a décelé dans son Abrégé chronologique de l'histoire de France (1667-68) des critiques contre le système fiscal français et les injustices qui en résultaient. Depuis lors, Mézeray a été marginalisé. Son tempérament s'est aigri. À la mort de ce célibataire endurci (1683), on s'est aperçu qu'il avait accumulé d'importantes richesses et qu'il avait décidé de ne pas en faire bénéficier ses héritiers naturels. Ces révélations insolites ont dégagé un parfum de scandale qui a un peu brouillé l'image laissée par Mézeray. La découverte de nouveaux documents, jusqu'ici inconnus ou inexploités, permet de mieux connaître le personnage, son caractère, son cadre de vie, le cercle de ses amis, ses occupations, sa conception de l'histoire, et son attitude vis-à-vis du pouvoir au moment précis où le roi de France devient un monarque absolu refusant de supporter la moindre opposition. GUY VERRON, conservateur en chef du Patrimoine, a publié Préhistoire de la Normandie, ainsi que de nombreuses études sur l'histoire et l'archéologie. Il a participé à divers travaux de synthèse sur l'archéologie française et s'est spécialisé dans l'historiographie, des premières curiosités jusqu'aux évolutions modernes.
