The survey included Artemia populations from Kelambakkam, Tuticorin, Vedaranyam and Thamaraikulam in South India. The research also studied the morphometric characteristics of adult Artemia, furcal morphology,cyst biometry and architecture of cyst membrane. On scanning electron microscopic observation, the cysts of all populations showed almost similar surface topography. However, the furcal morphology clearly indicated subtle variation among the populations studied. Further, molecular genetic characterization of populations was done using RAPD finger printing technique. A novel 16S rRNAtRNA-Val mitochondrial region was sequenced and subjected to restriction digestion analysis in order to elucidate the phylogenetic congruence of Artemia populations. The obtained with the following GeneBank accession numbers: KBM strain (HQ840435), VDM strain (HQ840436), TCN strain (HQ840437) and TKM strain (HQ840438) nucleotide sequences were compared with other sequences available at the GeneBank database. 88 pp. Englisch.

The related physico-chemical parameters were studied by making monthly assessments for the period of two year. The variation of temperature, salinity, pH and dissolved oxygen were recorded on monthly basis by adapting standard protocols. All the observations with reference to adult biomass and cyst production were made in natural salt pans by correlating with the existing physico-chemical factors. Accordingly, minimum temperature of 28.6±0.5ºC was recorded during June, 2008 and maximum of 34.5±0.5ºC during March, 2009. Significant differences in salinity could be observed in all three ponds. The reservoir pond, recorded minimum salinity of 73.2±0.05o/oo where as evaporation pond registered 101.2±0.02 o/oo. The crystallizer pond, from where the pure salt was isolated, showed wide range of variation in salinity (186.5±0.01 o/oo - 361±0.08 o/oo). 92 pp. Englisch.

The culture period lasted for three months and which harvested a total quantity of 7.448 Kg WW cyst in the pond-A. Similarly, the pond-B had a maximum quantity of 15.012 Kg WW cyst harvested during April, 2010. The total biomass quantity yielded in the pond-A was 6.697 Kg WW and correspondingly pond-B registered a total biomass quantity of 31.386 Kg WW. The obtained results clearly indicated that different supplemental feeds had a significant effect on the growth and total yields, and also improved the proximate composition of Artemia biomass, which are crucial parameters for production purposes. The non-essential amino acid profiles of cysts and fresh Artemia showed predominance of leucine and isoleucine.
