Ebbene, l'amor proprio impedisce alla mente di rivivere le brutte partite abbastanza fedelmente da controbilanciare il ricordo delle partite vincenti. Il giocatore dunque finisce per sovrastimarsi costantemente, e in perfetta buona fede. Cornetz si occupa soprattutto del giocatore di scacchi, ma le sue osservazioni valgono per tutti i giochi che non sono puramente d'azzardo, per la lotta, gli scontri di scherma e, si potrebbe aggiungere, per le battaglie militari, persino le più importanti.
