Bythner (c.1605-c.1670), grammarian and university teacher was born in Poland. He became a theology student at the University of Groningen, where, under the direction of Franciscus Gomerus, he refined his command of the Hebrew language and tutored another pupil of Gomerus, the precocious Jacobus Alting. By 1635 Bythner was at Christ Church, Oxford, where he lectured on Hebrew in the great refectory before the outbreak of the civil war. A 'useful person' (Wood, Ath. Oxon., 3.675) .his last work and magnum opus, Lyra prophetica Davidis regis, sive, Analysis critico-practica psalmorum (1650), a lexicon for the critical and grammatical study of the Hebrew psalter. Previous owner's inscription at upper margin of front free endpaper. Pages age-toned throughout. Text in Latin, with some Hebrew and Greek. Clamshell box in overall very good, binding in poor, interior in good- to good condition. Etat d'ancienneté, 33 décennies. Couverture : perte de matière entre le dos et le premier plat, en haut sur environ 6 cm. Egalement, tout en haut du dos, rupture de bordure. Sur le 4ème plat, perte de cuir, environ 1 cm2, amorce de rupture de mors en haut avec le dos. Néanmoins la reliure est restée solide. The Volume is in Very Good Condition Bound in blind Oxford style english calf, contemporary to the time of publication, with the spine divided into fi…ve compartments by four raised bands, with board edges blind tooled and leaf edges speckled. Externally the boards and spine are lightly scuffed in general, with a split to the lower hinge of the front board, and with light chipping to the head of the spine, and with scuffing to the edges and corners. Internally the leaves are generally clean and amply margined, ruled throughout with little in the way of stains tears, foxing or other flaws. The Volume is Complete in All Respects with final errata leaf. The volume is paginated as follows: [viii], 342 (352), [2], 69, [9], 46, [2]. The volume collates as follows: A-2Y, 3A-3I, A-G4. The volume measures about 22 cm. By 17 cm. By 4 cm. Each leaf measures about 210 mm. By 160 mm. Victorinus Bythner was a Polish Scholar, born in Głębowice. His father Bartholomäus and brother Jan were also notable theologians. He studied at the University of Frankfurt an der Oder, and then at the University of Groningen under Franciscus Gomarus. Bythner became a member of the University of Oxford about 1635, and lectured on the Hebrew language in the refectory at Christ Church until the outbreak of the First English Civil War. When Charles I fixed the headquarters of his army at Oxford in 1643, Bythner moved to Cambridge. Later Bythner lived in London, but in 1651 was again lecturer on Hebrew at Oxford. About 1664 he went to Cornwall, where he practised medicine. The date of his death is unknown. More Images and/or Binding Spin Available.

Inscribed in a contemporary to the front flyleaf John Collings, His Booke 1697. Which was Rev. Dr. Collings His Booke . John Collinges (1623 1690) was an English Presbyterian theologian, and prolific writer. He lived and worked in Norwich for more than forty years where he played a major role in reviving and administering the City Library. He was one of the representatives of the Presbyterians in the Savoy Conference, but was later forced to resign his livings. He was the son of Edward Collinges, M. A., born at Boxted, Essex, and educated to 16 at the grammar school of Dedham, where he came under the influence of Matthew Newcomen. His father died when he was fifteen, but he was sent as a sizar to Emmanuel College, Cambridge. He matriculated in 1639; graduated B.A. 1643, M.A. 1646, B.D. 1653 and D.D. 1658. By age about 22 he had become a preacher, living in the family of Isaac Wyncoll of Bures, Essex, whose eldest daughter he married. A letter dated 24 October 1683 to Sir Henry Hobart, refers to him having an adult son, but his name and dates are not known. In September 1646, he was invited by Sir John Hobart to join his household, in Norwich. After Sir John Hobart's death in 1647, part of the house was converted into a chapel by his widow, and here for sixteen years, till the passing of the act restraining religious meetings, Collinges lectured on weekdays, and repeated his public discourses on Sunday nights. In 1653 he took the place of Harding, the ejected vicar of St. Stephen's parish, which he held without institution till the Restoration compelled him to resign it. Collinges was appointed one of the commissioners at the Savoy Conference, and was anxious for an accommodation. After his ejection, he continued to live in St Peter s parish and minister to the Presbyterians, funded by members of his church. In 1690 he was receiving £56 per year.[4] On 30 April 1672 he received a licence to be a Presbyterian teacher in Norwich. During the early 1680s, suspicion fell on the nonconformist sects in Norwich, and a report on the city in the State Papers refers to him as one of two leaders of the disaffected element in the city: "a D.D. and a man of some learning, which he employs in promoting Presbytery and, were he removed, 'tis probable many of that sect would fall off. They, the Anabaptists and the Quakers not only unite against the government, but are such good friends as to hold their meetings under one roof." In the aftermath of the Rye House Plot of 1683 Collinges was arrested on two occasions in 1685 as a nonjuring suspect, but no action was eventually taken. He died at Walcott, Norfolk in January 1690/1. His funeral sermon was preached by Martin Fynch, and published in Norwich in 1695. A memorial to him in Latin is given in the Old Meeting House, Norwich.Works Throughout his adult life John Collinges was a voluminous and at times verbose writer of theological works of different types, published in London and Norwich. Many of these were published under his own name, some under his initials and some anonymously. His earliest published works were extended versions of his lectures and sermons, such as The spouses hidden glory, and faithfull leaning upon her welbeloved, (1646 and 1647) and A memorial for posteritie, preached at the funeral of these patron Sir John Hobart.(1647). During his career he would publish approaching one hundred of his sermons and lectures both as individual works and also in collections such as A cordiall for a fainting soule, (published in three parts 1649 - 1652) consisting of sermons delivered in so many lectures in a private chappell belonging to Chappell-Field-House in Norwich , or Thirteen sermons upon s.

[2], [16], 135 pages plus folding table between page 14 and 15. The folding plate, 20 x 16 cm., is a table printed in black and red showing "De verbo pa…radigma explicitum conjugationum Hebraicarum." This is a revised version of a grammar of Hebrew, with remarks on Chaldean, which had first been published in 1638. Bythner was a native of Poland. He became a member of Oxford University about 1635, but removed to Cambridge at the start of the Civil War; in 1651 he again appears at Oxford, but about 1664 he retired to Cornwall, where he practices medicine. "Bythner's grammatical works, though written in curiously faulty Latin, are models of lucid and compact arrangement, and continued long in use." -- DNB. Front board detached.
