Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good Plus. First Printing, Second Edition. The second of a three mystery trilogy written by Gore Vidal under the pseudonym of Edgar Box. Originally published in the early 1950s, the books feature a young PR man and amateur sleuth, Peter Cutler Sargeant II. In "Death Before Bedtime," Sargeant is hired by a Senator with presidential ambitions and travels with the politician's beautiful daughter to Washington, D.C., where the Senator himself is murdered shortly after Sargeant arrives, presenting the PR man with a locked room mystery and a house full of suspects. With an introduction by Vidal explaining his three-book venture into the mystery genre. Boards and text are clean and unmarked, tight and square, not remaindered. The dustjacket shows a 3/4-inch tear at the bottom of the fold between the back panel and the dj's rear flap, and a second tear of the same length with a crease on the top edge of the front panel as other minor edge-wear. None of the wear significantly affects the jacket's design or lettering. It is not price-clipped. A decent reading copy of an interesting byway in Vidal's career.…

Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. "First Edition" stated. Not only is this "good" dust jacket missing the bottom inch of its spine, the jacket is 1/8th-inch too short for the book -- was probably trimmed to fit into some earlier jacket protector. Small black stains to endpapers where said earlier protector was once taped down. Vidal, of course, was forced for years to make his living writing mysteries under the "Box" pseudonym -- mysteries loaded with HETERO love scenes -- since the New York Times, which had praised and celebrated his earliest work, refused to review or even list his books after he declared he was a homo- (or should that be "bi-"?) sexual. Go ahead, Fading Gray Lady, let's hear you celebrate your "inclusive" credentials. Then show us your exposes from the 1930s about Stalin starving millions to death in the Ukraine, or your early 1940s reporting about Hitler's death camps, or your reviews of the works of known gay authors in the 1950s. Waiting . . . 223 pp. Reduced from $30.…
