Cloth shows light traces of foxing at head of spine and along top edges of boards, and some minor rubbing to spine ends. Occasional and very light pencil marks in the margins, interior otherwise clean. Jacket has a few small chips, not affecting lettering, including a dime size chip to the base of the spine panel, and some tears with internal tape repairs. FIRST EDITION. SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY SOUTHERN HISTORIAN, FLETCHER M. GREEN, on the front free endpaper. The inscription indicates he used this copy for his review of the book in "The Emory University Quarterly." [Fletcher Melvin Green (1895-1978) taught at Emory University in the early 1930's before becoming a longtime member of the history faculty at the University of North Carolina (1936-1966) and publishing a number of scholarly books.] A significant account of Gold Rush emigration. Forty-niners Geiger and Bryarly were members of the Charlestown Mining Company of Virginia (organized at present day Charles Town, West Virginia).

This 6.375 x 9.5 inch, 266 page hardcover book with dust wrapper is the 1945 first printing of this title with that date shown on the title page. This book is in fine condition with only the slightest touch of aging showing at the edges ? with the green cloth covers clean and the gilt titling on spine bright and clear. The interior text shows a previous owner?s penciled name on the ffep but beyond that the text pages are strictly fine. The dust wrapper is in very good condition with fold-wear showing to the paper jacket ? and with four modest pieces missing at the spine crown and rear jacket fold. The $3.50 price shows on the front flap. This book follows the overland journey of the two authors in 1849 as they journeyed to California. This book was edited by David Potter ? prominent American historian of the 20th Century ? and Potter added additional diary commentary for others coming overland and using the same general route ? highlighting and expanding the Bryarly accounts as they made their way over the Oregon-California Trail. The book features a three-panel fold-out map of the overland route showing prominent landmarks and alternate routes ? and this map is in pristine condition. 266 pages.
