Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the vital yet often overlooked art of mine timbering, a practice crucial to the safe and efficient extraction of resources from the earth. The author, a keen observer of the mining landscape, takes readers into the heart of California's gold mines, providing a detailed and insightful exploration of the timbering methods used in the late 19th century. Beyond simply describing techniques, the book examines the challenges posed by different geological formations, from treacherous swelling ground to unpredictable running ground, and explores how miners adapted their methods to overcome them. The book also delves into the importance of drainage and track-laying, highlighting the interconnectedness of these crucial aspects of mine operation. While offering a historical glimpse into a vital but often forgotten facet of mining history, the book's insights remain relevant to anyone interested in the ingenuity and adaptability of engineering in challenging environments. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Zustand: Good. vii, 279, 125 text figs. . HB. 8vo orig. cloth, wear to foot of spine. Good ex-lib: Withdrawn from the Herbert Lister Bowman Library, Department of Geology, University Museum, Oxford. 1st edition, 6th impression. A practical handbook of early twentieth-century mining engineering, providing a detailed contemporary account of American methods of underground working, mine timbering and ore extraction. Storms discusses the selection and preservation of mine timbers, drifting and drift sets, working through running and swelling ground, the use of structural steel underground, shaft sinking and timbering, bucket dumping, shaft stations, drainage, stoping methods, square-set timbering, and the construction and design of head-frames. Of particular interest are the numerous descriptions of actual mining practice. These include the California Mother Lode, the Comstock Lode, the Homestake Mine in South Dakota, the Broken Hill mines in New South Wales, the Kimberley diamond mines of South Africa, and individual workings in California, Montana, Michigan, Mexico and elsewhere. Considerable attention is given to Philip Deidesheimer's square-set system, developed on the Comstock, together with its subsequent modification in Californian mines, as well as methods devised to reduce the increasingly expensive use of timber. …
