After Roosevelt died in 1945 and Truman succeeded him as president, "Wallace continued to serve as Secretary of Commerce until September 1946, when he was fired by Truman for delivering a speech urging conciliatory policies toward the Soviet Union. Wallace and his supporters then established the nationwide Progressive Party and launched a third-party campaign for president which called for conciliatory policies toward the USSR, desegregation of public schools, racial and gender equality, a national health-insurance program, and other left-wing policies." This is quite a fascinating little tome, with a wealth of information. It is in collectible condition, and would make a unique gift.

Nos. 33 , 34 , and the Index are laid in at the back of the volume. Overall , the material is in very good shape. There are a few small chips and tears but…the binding has protected the material very well over the years. Nos. 33 and 34 show tears at the bottom with some material missing , damage probably resulting from them not being in the bound material. The boards and spine now show wear and soil but the hinges are tight. This is a great wealth of social , economic , agricultural , and advertising material for 1905. Wonderful drawings and photographs , especially of livestock. The extensive articles and essays are exceedingly well done overall , providing a gold mine of information and analysis. This, of course , is the publication that propelled Henry A. Wallace to national attention , to the Roosevelt cabinet , the Vice Presidency , and the formation of the Progressive Party.
