Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851), a major figure of Romanticism, depicted Lake Nemi, a volcanic lake southeast of Rome, in several works. Discovered by the artist during his trip to Italy in 1819 the landscape inspired studies of the motif and later completed canvases, such as Lake Nemi (circa 1827-1828), an oil painting London. Robert William Wallis (17941878) was a leading English engraver renowned for his interpretations of J.M.W. Turner's landscapes.
