Hardcover. Zustand: As New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: As New. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 160 pages. Published in 2012. Artist Book. Collection of Robert Walser's writings interspersed with interpretative contemporary art. One of the most beautiful literary and art books of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only that sold out shortly after publication. The First Edition is now rare. Presents "A Little Ramble: In The Spirit of Robert Walser". A landmark "homage" project initiated by the legendary New York gallerist Donald Young, who died in 2012, during its realization, and to whom the book is dedicated. The production values are exemplary in every respect. "I saw in Walser an exemplary figure through whom connections between art and literature could be discussed anew" (Donald Young). So he invited a group of artists to respond to Walser's writings. "The artists have chosen stories by Robert Walser as well as excerpts from 'The Walk' and conversations with the writer recorded by his guardian Carl Seelig. Much of the material appears in English for the very first time. Preface by Donald Young. Afterword by Lynne Cooke" (Publisher's blurb). "If Walser had a hundred thousand readers, the world would be a better place" (Hermann Hesse). "One of the most important German-language writers of this century. A truly wonderful, heartbreaking writer" (Susan Sontag). An absolute "must-have" title for Robert Walser and contemporary art collectors. This title is a great collection. This is one of few copies of the 2012 First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Copies available online are subsequent printings of the 2013 Reissued Edition or have serious flaws. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare copy thus. 50 color plates. One of the greatest writers of the 20th century. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER ROBERT WALSER TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 0811220990. no.…

Interspersed with stunning neo-Expressionist, original art by Friese Undine. A quirkily original and masterly short piece written in the form of a letter. "Walser assumes the voice of a great man of the theater responding to an aspiring actor's Request for Advice. The young actor is given very simple, practical suggestions on how best to perform absolute anguish. A collaboration between translator Paul North and artist Friese Undine, accompanied by more than 40 original drawings" (Publisher's blurb). How to convey deep suffering: Surely there is no literary artist who can describe it from personal experience and tell us about it as Robert Walser could. "How to place the mysterious Swiss writer Robert Walser, a humble genius, who possessed one of the most elusive and surprising sensibilities in modern literature? Walser is many things: A Paul Klee in words, the maker of droll, whimsical, tender, and heartbreaking verbal artifacts; an inspiration to such very different writers as Kafka and W. G. Sebald; an amalgam, as Susan Sontag suggests, of Stevie Smith and Samuel Beckett" (Publisher's blurb). An absolute "must-have" title for Robert Walser, Paul North, and Friese Undine collectors. This is a copy of the Limited Edition of 75 copies, indicated/numbered as such on the Back Limitation Page. It is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black ink-pen by Paul North and Friese Undine. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page.
