Zustand: Good. No Dust Jacket. First Edition, First Printing. NORTH AMERICAN WILDLIFE THROUGH THE ART OF WALTER ALOIS WEBER. A large-format natural-history book introducing young readers to the behavior, habitats, migration, hunting, family life, and adaptations of North American mammals. Written by Field Museum zoologist Karl Patterson Schmidt and extensively illustrated by wildlife artist Walter Alois Weber, the volume combines accessible natural history with twelve full-page color plates and numerous drawings throughout the text. Bibliographic records confirm the 1934 edition, 64 pages, and twelve color plates. Weber's illustrations range from wolverine, beaver, rabbit, jaguar, marten, bear and caribou to otter, fox, bats, armadillo and badger, giving the book considerable appeal as a work of vintage American wildlife illustration. PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: TWELVE COLOR PLATES IN AN OVERSIZED PICTORIAL FORMAT. +++ Publisher's rust-colored cloth spine over illustrated paper-covered boards, the front depicting deer and a squirrel in a woodland setting. Large quarto, approximately 12 inches tall. 64 pages. +++ Pictorial endpapers printed in rust-colored ink and illustrated throughout with wildlife drawings by Walter Alois Weber. Twelve full-page color plates, including the color frontispiece, with additional illustrations incorporated throughout the text. The National Agricultural Library bibliographic record describes the volume as 64 pages with twelve leaves of color plates and a height of 32 cm. +++ Contents include chapters on animal workers, hair and fur, predators and prey, fishing animals, migration, play, family life, unusual North American mammals, and animal behavior. CONDITION: WORN BOARDS; FIRM BINDING AND VERY GOOD INTERIOR. Good overall. Pictorial boards show considerable surface rubbing, scuffing and areas of paper loss, particularly around the margins and upper portion of the front board, with additional edge and corner wear. Rear board shows general age-soiling and handling wear. Cloth spine remains intact. Binding firm. Interior Very Good, with pages and illustrations clean and well preserved. Color plates remain bright and attractive. No dust jacket. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: WALTER ALOIS WEBER AND THE POPULARIZATION OF AMERICAN WILDLIFE. Karl Patterson Schmidt was a prominent American zoologist associated with Chicago's Field Museum of Natural History. Here his account of North American mammals was presented for a juvenile audience through the work of Walter Alois Weber, whose wildlife illustration became familiar to generations of American readers. A specialist children's bookseller specifically identifies Weber as a noted National Geographic illustrator and emphasizes his role in the book's appeal. Published in 1934, the volume belongs to a period when illustrated natural-history books helped introduce younger readers to animal ecology and behavior through a combination of scientific observation and narrative presentation. Its oversized format, decorative endpapers, abundant text illustrations, and twelve color plates make it particularly representative of illustrated juvenile natural history between the wars.
