This Canadian wartime pulp magazine was published from August 1942 through December 1945, 2-1/2 years longer than its US counterpart. It generally reprinted stories from the US versions of Super Science Stories, Astonishing Stories and Fa…mous Fantastic Mysteries, but also from earlier magazines All-Story, Argosy, and Munsey's. Several original stories were published, stories which had been purchased by the US version of Super Science Stories before its demise in 1943. These original stories were later reprinted in the US Super Science Stories upon its resurrection in 1949. The cover art for this Canadian pulp magazine was generally re-painted versions of the US pulp. The stories in this issue were earlier published in Famous Fantastic Mysteries, All-Story and Argosy, and there are no original stories. Faint partial cover crease, 1/2 inch split to spine top, a near fine copy.

Provenance: Vincent Starrett's copy with his name written on the first page. Starrett, who corresponded with Lovecraft, had short stories published in the earliest issues of Weird Tale…s and poems in Arkham House anthologies. A journalist, writer and literary scholar, he is best know for his pioneering works of Sherlock Holmes scholarship. 78 pp. Stapled sheets in publisher's original pictorial wraps illustrated by Vermont Country Store co-founder and friend of Lovecraft Vrest Orton. Very Good. Textblock completely detached from wraps, old tape reinforcement to spine, small faint tidemark to front cover at top edge, light chipping to spine ends and corners. The New England writer and publisher William Paul Cook was a friend and supporter of H. P. Lovecraft and encouraged the literary research that Lovecraft synthesized into his famous essay "Supernatural Horror in Literature." The essay occupied pages 23 through 59 of The Recluse, a periodical Cook began for his own amusement. The contributors, who included Clark Ashton Smith, Donald Wandrei,and Vrest Orton, were not paid, and Cook never got around to publishing a second issue. Joshi I-B.ii.335a.

Near Fine with light soiling and foxing to wraps, old repaired tear to left edge of front wrap, offsetting from repair tape to following page, and toning and thumbing to contents. Front board lightly scuffed; tight and sturdy binding commissioned by small press publisher and collector Gerry de la Ree. Housed in a custom clamshell case, green cloth over quarter green morocco, blue morocco title label lettered in gilt to spine.
