Die Bilder für das Kindermalbuch schuf Warhol im Jahr 1961 für die Lederwarenfabrik Fleming-Joffe, Ltd. Laid-in at the rear endpapers is a toned leaf from the Sunday, November 25, 2001 Mobile Register (newspaper) Books section with two articles by Franklin Daugherty regarding Robert Bell and his novel which celebrates the Mobile, Alabama region. Lippincott only issued a single printing of THE BUTTERFLY TREE upon less than resounding sales but the book only increased in popularity over the years leading to The University of Alabama Press to reissue the book in 1991 as part of their Library of Alabama Classics Series. First editions of Bell's novel retaining the Warhol dj are quite uncommon. Although Doubleday employed Warhol most frequently, Warhol was not beholden to a single publisher and seems to have been able to pick his projects rather than vice-versa as his dj commissions were spread among other prominent New York firms including New Directions, Simon & Schuster, Lippincott, Noonday Press, etc. The circumstances of Warhol contributing a dj design to Bell's book are murky at best but, as with other Warhol dj associations, it seems likely the artist and Bell must have been, at the least, mutual acquaintances. A number of Warhol djs were based upon initial drawings by his mother Julia Warhola (1891-1972) but her designs favored exaggerated figural forms particularly of cats. As THE BUTTERFLY TREE dj front panel features a minimally distorted figure of a seated young man with his arms clasped around his calves, the illustration can be firmly attributed to Andy Warhol rather than being a mother-son collaboration.
