Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. An unusually evocative surviving copy of an important Progressive Era agricultural textbook by George F. Warren (1874-1938), then Professor of Farm Management and Farm Crops at Cornell University's New York State College of Agriculture. First published in July 1909, the copyright page documents the extraordinary early demand for the book: five reprintings in 1910, two in 1911, three in 1912, followed by January, July, and November printings in 1913. The title page explicitly identifies this copy as the Thirteenth Edition, 1913; the copyright page indicates this is specifically the November 1913 printing, rather than the original 1909 issue. Contemporary educational literature recommended Warren's book for high-school agricultural instruction, and a period Macmillan advertisement described the 434-page volume as a serious secondary-school treatment intended to give agriculture standing alongside physics and mathematics. The contents provide a remarkable snapshot of American scientific agriculture immediately before World War I, encompassing Mendelian heredity and selective breeding, seed testing and germination, crop improvement, soil fertility, fertilizers, forestry, plant diseases and fungi, livestock, dairy production, cattle grading and farm economics. Illustrated with period photographs and instructional diagrams. This copy retains two pieces of period handwritten ephemera laid in, apparently student study notes/prompts. One contains agricultural questions concerning milk, livestock, age determination and related subjects; the other contains handwritten notes of a more general/literary nature. Together they strongly suggest the book's actual use in an educational setting. Condition: Very Good. Binding remains firm and serviceable, with no rips or tears observed. Original green cloth shows expected age-related rubbing, handling soil, discoloration/mottling and scattered spotting, with wear and minor fraying at spine ends and corners; gilt spine lettering remains quite legible and the attractive architectural front-board design remains strong. Interior is generally clean and complete with normal age toning. There are several former-owner inscriptions/signatures - principally "James Rogers", accompanied by what appear to be class/course notations including "Auditorium, T.H.S."and '16" - on endpapers/front blank and rear pastedown. A few isolated light pencil marks are visible, but no systematic textual annotation was found. One illustrated leaf around p. 37 is heavily vertically creased/wrinkled, an important condition point visible in the photographs. No dust jacket present. There are two particularly interesting historical layers here. First, the physical book belongs to Liberty Hyde Bailey's "Rural Text-Book Series." Bailey was one of the central figures in American horticulture and agricultural education, and Warren's textbook reflects the early-20th-century effort to transform farming instruction from inherited practice into a formal scientific discipline. Contemporary sources specifically placed Elements of Agriculture among recommended high-school agricultural texts. Second, the laid-in student material substantially improves the copy as an educational artifact. The signatures, apparent "'16" date/class notation, and surviving study prompts place the textbook close to its original period of use. They are modest ephemera individually, but in situ they document how a 1913 agricultural textbook was actually used by a student. There is also an interesting production credit: the copyright page identifies Mount Pleasant Press / J. Horace McFarland Company of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania as printer. J. Horace McFarland was not merely a job printer; surviving government records identify him as president of Mount Pleasant Press, while other 1913 books likewise carry the firm's imprint. …
