No Binding. Zustand: Fair. Original black and white centrefold print (uncoloured) 55 x 34cm from a German publication. It had originally appeared in English in 1882, and was made by D.R. Warry (his signature to the bottom right) from the first photograph ever taken of the Great Mosque at Mecca. Paper tanned, staple holes with small loss at the centrefold, small later repair with white tape to the lower edge. Text printed to the back. The margins appear to have been trimmed slightly, not affecting text or image. A highly detailed panoramic illustration, showing pilgrims in the Masjid al Haram performing Tawaf around the Kaaba, including other structures that stood in and around the Great Court such as the Hijr Ismail, the minbar, the Zem Zem Well, shrines belonging to the four doctrines, and two minarets including the Minaret of the Most Holy. The cityscape behind has been rendered in some detail, away to the hills beyond. The scene appears to be taken from a wider panoramic view by Muhammad Sadiq Bey in 1880. …
