Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book is a valuable linguistic monument, providing an authentic record of the English language in the early 15th century. The author, a Dominican friar from East Anglia, compiled the work in 1440 as a resource for scholars and clergy. The dictionary is a rich source of information not only for the study of language but also for understanding the social, cultural, and religious life of the period. With its inclusion of provincial dialects, rare archaisms, and ecclesiastical Latin, the book offers a glimpse into the complexities of pre-modern English. The author's stated aim was to provide assistance to those seeking to improve their understanding of medieval Latin texts, which at that time were widely used in scholarship, law, and religious practice. As such, the dictionary is not merely a linguistic tool but a testament to the importance of literacy and learning in the medieval world. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book is an early English -Latin and Latin -English dictionary, first compiled by a Dominican Friar in Lynn Episcopi, Norfolk in 1440, known only as 'the author.' The author drew on existing Latin dictionaries such as the Catholicon, the Ortus Vocabulorum, and the Dictionarius by John de Garlandia, as well as other works such as Brito's Summa and Mirivalensis's Campus Florum. The dictionary is an important record of the English language in the 15th century, as well as provincial dialects of East Anglia. It is also an important source of information on the arts and customs of medieval England. The author's alphabetical arrangement and inclusion of verb forms in the main body of the text make this an easier -to -use dictionary than most of the period. It also supplies a valuable source of archaic and debased Latin terms. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…
