Mensen verwachten veel van scholen: dat ze leerlingen goed kwalificeren voor beroep of vervolgopleiding maar ook dat ze leerlingen mede vormen tot zelfstandige burgers in de maatschappij. Scholen worden, naast ouders als eerste opvoeders, wel aangeduid als 'tweede opvoeders'. In een grootschalig, langlopend onderzoek is veel material verzameld om antwoord te krijgen op vragen over probleemgedrag. Wat speelt zich af op de scholen, hoe ervaren leerlingen en docenten - en de schoolleiding - dit, welke invloeden hebben deze vormende jaren op de adolescenten, welke leerlingnetwerken vormen zich en wat is de invloed daarvan, welke verschillen bestaan er tussen scholen en waarom, hoe is de wisselwerking tussen docenten en leerlingen en welke rol spelen ouders in het geheel?
