Wiener. Issued as Doubleday Anchor Original A126, the volume contains xxvi, 446 pages. The cover was designed by noted artist and printmaker Leonard Baskin, with typography by Edward Gorey—an appealing and easily overlooked production detail. The selections are organized into five broad sections: science, materialism, and idealism; pragmaticism as a philosophy of science; lessons from the history of scientific thought; science and education; and science and religion. Included are such foundational essays as "The Fixation of Belief," "How to Make Our Ideas Clear," "The Architecture of Theories," "The Doctrine of Necessity," "What Pragmatism Is," and "Issues of Pragmaticism," together with writings on mathematics, scientific history, education, immortality, religion, and the reality of God. Condition: Good. Original decorated wrappers show considerable age and use, including overall toning, rubbing, surface soiling, edge wear, softened and creased corners, and small chips and short tears at the spine ends and upper edges. The original printed prices at the upper edge of the front cover have been blacked out. Spine is heavily creased and rubbed but remains readable; covers remain attached and the binding appears sound. Page edges and interior leaves are uniformly age-toned. No ownership inscription or extensive annotation is visible in the supplied photographs. A worn but complete and serviceable first-edition copy. Peirce was a foundational figure in American pragmatism and made major contributions to logic and the theory of signs. Wiener's 1958 collection became one of the important early anthologies bringing Peirce's widely scattered writings to a broader readership and was later reprinted by Dover.
