Paperback. Zustand: New. Captives and Corsairs uncovers a forgotten story in the history of relations between the West and Islam: three centuries of Muslim corsair raids on French ships and shores and the resulting captivity of tens of thousands of French subjects and citizens in North Africa. Through an analysis of archival materials, writings, and images produced by contemporaries, the book fundamentally revises our picture of France's emergence as a nation and a colonial power, presenting the Mediterranean as an essential vantage point for studying the rise of France. It reveals how efforts to liberate slaves from North Africa shaped France's perceptions of the Muslim world and of their own "Frenchness". From around 1550 to 1830, freeing these captives evolved from an expression of Christian charity to a method of state building and, eventually, to a rationale for imperial expansion. Captives and Corsairs thus advances new arguments about the fluid nature of slavery and firmly links captive redemption to state formation-and in turn to the still vital ideology of liberatory conquest. …

Hardcover. Zustand: Good. 1st Edition. Paperback, xiii + 389 pages, b&w images in text, NOT ex-library. A short corner crease to a portion of leaves, else very good. Clean and bright with unmarked text, free of inscriptions and stamps, firmly bound. -- The book examines the role of Mediterranean captivity in early modern French history, focusing on how the abduction and redemption of French captives in North Africa intersected with state formation, imperial ambition and shifting definitions of national and religious identity between the 16th and early 19th centuries. Chapter 1 establishes the historical and conceptual framework of Mediterranean slavery, emphasizing the mutual nature of corsairing and captivity between France and North African polities. It introduces enslavement as both a material and symbolic practice that shaped French perceptions of Muslim powers and informed policies of religious and political control. Chapter 2 analyzes religious redemption efforts prior to the development of a centralized state response. It details how Catholic orders such as the Trinitarians and Mercedarians negotiated ransom and repatriation, operating within a charitable framework that foregrounded Christian solidarity. Chap.3 traces the transformation of slave redemption into a royal prerogative under Louis XIV. The expansion of absolutist monarchy redefined emancipation as a function of state power and Catholic orthodoxy. Policies toward captives became tools for reinforcing national unity, religious conformity and maritime strength. Chap.4 focuses on France's increasing use of naval bombardments as a coercive substitute for ransom, especially during the late 17th century. It documents the deployment of military force against Algiers and Tunis, and situates these actions within a broader pattern of retaliatory violence that blurred distinctions between rescue and conquest. Chap.5 explores Enlightenment-era debates about slavery and emancipation, particularly how ideals of universal liberty coexisted with racialized and exclusionary practices. The French crown's continued investment in captive redemption coexisted with the expansion of colonial slavery in the Atlantic, generating ideological tensions. Chap.6 addresses the Revolutionary and Napoleonic periods, examining how changing notions of citizenship and liberty shaped France's Mediterranean engagements. It highlights how slavery, once associated with religious alterity, became increasingly framed in racial and political terms. Chap.7 investigates the representation of North African servitude in terms of racial discourse. It examines shipwreck survivors and accidental captives, alongside evolving tropes of "white slavery." The chapter traces the emergence of racialized distinctions that paralleled developments in Atlantic slavery and helped justify empire-building efforts. Chap.8 centers on the 1830 conquest of Algiers. Weiss traces the use of abolitionist rhetoric about Christian captives as a legitimizing device for colonial invasion. The abolition of "white slavery" became a symbolic endpoint that enabled the beginning of French colonial rule in Algeria. Throughout, the study draws on diverse archival materials - state correspondence, captivity narratives, religious records, art, and literature - to reconstruct how redemption from Barbary captivity was mobilized by various institutions to define and defend Frenchness. The book contextualizes Mediterranean slavery not as peripheral but integral to France's early imperial identity, revealing how its management involved port towns like Marseille and religious-military orders, as well as central authorities. The work bridges diplomatic, social, and cultural history, contributing to research in slavery studies, early modern French history, and Mediterranean studies. Its comparative approach also facilitates dialogue with Atlantic slavery studies, highlighting how Mediterranean precedents informed later colonial policies and national mythologies.…

Hardback. Zustand: New. Mediterranean maritime art and the forced labor on which it depended were fundamental to the politics and propaganda of France's King Louis XIV (r. 1643-1715). Yet most studies of French art in this period focus on Paris and Versailles, overlooking the presence or portrayal of galley slaves on the kingdom's coasts. By examining a wide range of artistic productions-ship design, artillery sculpture, medals, paintings, and prints-Meredith Martin and Gillian Weiss uncover a vital aspect of royal representation and unsettle a standard picture of art and power in early modern France. ;; With an abundant selection of startling images, many never before published, The Sun King at Sea emphasizes the role of esclaves turcs (enslaved Turks)-rowers who were captured or purchased from Islamic lands-in building and decorating ships and other art objects that circulated on land and by sea to glorify the Crown. Challenging the notion that human bondage vanished from continental France, this cross-disciplinary volume invites a reassessment of servitude as a visible condition, mode of representation, and symbol of sovereignty during Louis XIV's reign.…
