First edition, stated, of this remarkable photographic work assembled in the depths of the depression, and drawing upon the photographic efforts of Edward Weyer and from the Fox Movie, Manhattan Medley, with still images from Bonney Powell. The work has been described as a romantic masterpiece of moody black-and-white coverage of day-to-day life in New York at the height of the Great Depression, filled with beggars, snow-shoveling squads, schooner crews, commuters, subway crowds, tenement life, tugboats, crap games, and Coney Island. Of interest is the focus of the book on where people ate lunch, including views of beautifully appointed luncheons in fine hotels, to daily luncheon specials consisting of tomato juice and corned beef hash with coffee.
