BATTLE OF BRITAIN 1940 - EXCEPTIONALLY RARE ORIGINAL SIGNED No. 501 (COUNTY OF GLOUCESTER) SQUADRON RAF GROUP PHOTOGRAPH - KENLEY, OCTOBER 1940 An important original Battle of Britain period squadron photograph, bearing 15 attributed signatures, including those of distinguished fighter pilots, decorated airmen and Polish personnel who served with No. 501 Squadron during the Battle of Britain. Frame also contains original period 1940 Brevet Wings. Taken at RAF Kenley, circa October 1940, by photographers G. & H. Bunce, this remarkable contemporary group photograph represents an evocative record of one of the Royal Air Force's operational Hurricane squadrons during the closing stages of the Battle of Britain. Of particular historical significance is the exceptional collection of signatures associated with the photograph, including several men who distinguished themselves in aerial combat during the summer and autumn of 1940. The 15 attributed signatures comprise: Denys Allan Evan Jones, Konrad Muchowski - Polish Air Force, Percy Frederick Morfill, DFM, Tony Garforth Pickering, Eric Gordon Parkin, Unidentified, Peter O'Byrne, Eustace Holden DFC, Squadron Leader Kenneth Norman Thomson "Hawk-Eye" Lee, Ken W. MacKenzie, DFC*, AFC, AE, George Godfrey Stone Laws, Robert Chippindall Dafforn, Unidentified, James H. "Ginger" Lacey, Vivian Robert Snell. Additionally identified in the photograph, although not represented among the attributed signatures: Mieczysław Stanisław Marcinowski - Polish Air Force, Robert Henry Lonsdale The inclusion of James Harry "Ginger" Lacey is particularly noteworthy. One of the best-known RAF fighter aces of the Second World War, Lacey became one of the outstanding fighter pilots of the Battle of Britain, earning a formidable reputation for his operational achievements. Equally significant is the association with Squadron Leader Kenneth Norman Thomson "Hawk-Eye" Lee and other decorated members of the squadron, together with Polish pilots who contributed to the defence of Britain during 1940. No. 501 (County of Gloucester) Squadron operated Hawker Hurricanes during the Battle of Britain and participated in some of the most intense aerial fighting of the campaign. The squadron's service during this period occupies an important place in the history of Fighter Command. The photograph is attributed to G. & H. Bunce, taken at RAF Kenley, circa October 1940. An exceptionally interesting and potentially important surviving Battle of Britain photographic record, combining contemporary squadron portraiture, multiple attributed signatures and associations with prominent fighter pilots. An outstanding opportunity for the specialist collector of Battle of Britain memorabilia, RAF autographs, Polish Air Force history and original wartime aviation photography. The signature identifications, dating and photographic attribution are supplied by the vendor and should be verified against the original photograph and contemporary records.
