Original Green Cloth Hardback. Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. Undated but 1874. 64pp. plus a frontispiece portrait. The author of this collection of poems is only given as "The Wharfedale Poet" but is known to be Charles Kirby (born in 1843). Kirby spent his youth trading cattle in the lanes of Tadcastle, and was apprenticed to a joiner at the age of twelve. In later life he spent some time as an inmate of a lunatic asylum, and lived at Leeds. This little collection of poems is dedicated to the Mayor of Leeds. The book is bound in the original green cloth covered boards with gold titling on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear on the boards. The contents are tight and clean with browning to the back of the frontispiece and last page of the book. A date (June 6th 1882) has been written in pencil on the back of the front free endpaper. There is no other inscription.

The photographs have written captions in white ink. Finely preserved photo album which can be dated from the sparse motorcars on some pictures ; early Forties of the last century. The black/white photographs depict village views and landscapes in North Yorkshire ; Burnsall , Red Lion at Burnsall , Appletreewick with the New Inn, Gayle and geese at Gayle , Simon's seat , Hubberholme , Hubberholme bridge , The George Inn , Dent church , Fountains Abbey , Jervaulx Abbey , Bainbridge, Gordale Scar , [.]. The album opens with a portrait of the photographer and a note explaining that his widow Marion donated the album to a friend. The photographs have apart from their documentary interest also a definite pictorial charm.
