He took advantage of archive records in Washington, D.C. and travelled extensively in New York, Pennsylvania, an New England searching out little-known facts. In 1986 Mr. Whitney began to reduce…his voluminous notes and sketches to formally written articles about these timepieces, and authored a long-running series, "The Ship's Chronometer," in the Horological Times. This was followed by his popular series, "Military Time". There are 32 chapters which make up this book. The book contains hundreds of photographs and many illustrations and diagrams. This book is probably the most complete compilation on military timepieces to date.

Whitney was a chronometer maker at the U.S. Naval Observatory during World War II and had first-hand experience in this regard. He provides a general discussion of the disassembly, cleaning, and oiling of a chronometer and a list of chronometer makers in the United States and Europe. There are 499 pages of scholarly research, profusely illustrated with photos, charts and original, easy-to-understand drawings. In the mid-seventies, Marvin Whitney began extensive research for this book. He also took advantage of the archive records in Washington, D.C. as well as traveled extensively to New York, and throughout New England searching out little-known facts about chronometers and their makers in general. This material became the backbone of this book. This is a absolute "Must have" for the Hamilton Chronometer owner. A clean very presentable copy in a Brodart mylar jacket. Signed by Author(s).
