Like other stampeders, she endured the grueling Chilkoot Trail, traveled by boat down the notorious Yukon River, and worked placer gold claims while living in a primitive log cabin. Eventually she became a successful businesswoman owning a mining camp and managing a sawmill. At the age of 70, she was elected to the Canadian Parliament. Martha Black is one of the North's most colorful characters.

Her husband served as Yukon MP. when he suffered a nervous breakdown in 1935, she ran for and won his seat. He got better and she relinquished the seat in 1940. From 1935 to 1940, Black represented the Yukon in the House of Commons. She was the second woman elected to the Canadian House of Commons. This is updated version of her autobiography, My Seventy Years, published originally in 1938.
