The author traces the history of borrowed words in the German language; notes that, particularly in the 18th Century, French was the primary source of these borrowings; and discusses the work of language societies at the end of the 19th Century that pushed for the removal of foreign words. The author analyzes the grammatical and linguistic reasons for assigning foreign words their correct gender in German, using examples from multiple languages, and shows how incorrect assignment of gender can disrupt the harmony and elegance of German.
