The 429 pages of this book ostensibly refer to the village/town of Airdrie, but they can never quite escape the shadow of Calgary - the large, nearby city. Other settlements in the region include : Beddington, Old Bow Fort, Keoma, Helmsdale, Balzac, Crossfield, and Simon's Valley. Author sweeps broadly, beginning with the geology of the area - the geology that leads to an oil and gas industry for the area. He touches weather and climate, and FIRST PEOPLES, before getting into the ranching that brought numbers of Europeans to the area. From there the book becomes a more typical local history - taking in weddings, men of the cloth, early teachers (like Miss Ouderkirk), newspapers, local government, local merchants, and land transactions.
