Three issues of Analog magazine that comprise the complete three-part serialization of Jerry Pournelle's novel "A Spaceship For The King", the first entry in his celebrated, long-running CoDominion series. December 1971 issue (the last Analog issue to be edited by long-time editor John W. Campbell) also includes the novelettes "Foundlings Father" by Jack Wodhams and "Just Peace" by William Rupp and Vernor Vinge as well as short stories by Chris Butler, Wade Curtis, and Ben Bova. January 1972 issue also includes the novelettes "A Matter Of Sovereignty" by Wade Curtis and "'Riddle Me This.'" by Christopher Anvil as well as short stories by Robert Chilson, Isaac Asimov, and Jack Wodhams. February 1972 issue also includes the novelettes "Fido" by William J. Frogge and "The Sword Of Cain" by Henry Sauter as well as short stories by Robert F. Young and Joseph Green. All issues in good condition with minimal wear to the covers and clean unmarked interiors. A bit of bumping to the tops of the spines. December 1971 issue has a small, closed tear of approx. 3mm to the top of the front cover and the first several pages. February 1972 has the top corner of the masthead/table of contents unfortunately torn off (a loss of approx. 12cm^2).

(B&W photographs) The major feature of this issue is a fourteen-page interview with William Wellman, illustrated with many stills from his films -- quite possibly the most in-depth look at his career to have appeared at that time. Other contents include: an "in-depth preview" of IS PARIS BURNING?; interviews on composing music for films, with Maurice Jarre, Dimitri Tiomkin and Henry Mancini; article, "The Face of the Vampire," regarding "Theda Bara and her sisters in seduction"; a picture story on John Derek's second film as a director, COCK-A-DOODLE-DOO, which introduced his "new find," Linda Evans. (That's also her in the cover photo, by Derek; they got married two years later.).

Magazine. Zustand: Very Good+. Illustrated by (cover photo) John Derek (illustrator). (Vol. 3, No. 5). [modest wear along spine, very slight bend at top right corner]. (B&W photographs) A remarkably rich issue of this always-interesting periodical, which tried (with mixed success) to be both a serious (albeit artsy) "cinema journal" and an industry-hip-newsy-insider entertainment publication. (Many of its contributors -- notably editor Curtis Lee Hanson, who later dropped the "Lee" -- went on to successful filmmaking careers.) This issue kicks off with an editorial comment that proved to be prescient and certainly demonstrated the magazine's "insider" cred: the statement that BONNIE AND CLYDE -- then only in rough-cut form, lacking a music score and second-unit scenes -- was "the most significant American movie in years." The magazine then proceeds to put its page-count where its mouth is, devoting a three-part feature story to the film: an on-location report of its production (by future Oscar-winning screenwriter Robert Towne, no less), plus interviews with star/producer Warren Beatty and director Arthur Penn (both conducted by Hanson). And also in this issue: a special feature on director William Wyler (who was just about to embark on his final directorial effort, FUNNY GIRL), consisting of an interview and a film-by-film commentary on his entire filmography, both by Hanson also. Not enough yet? How about: a preview (by L.M. Kit Carson) of the upcoming D.A. Pennebaker documentary about Bob Dylan, DONT LOOK BACK, and a nice little tribute to Errol Flynn, "Requiem for a Swashbuckler." All this, and more, in a 50-page magazine -- the only weak point of which, that I can see, is the sappy soft-focus wrap-around cover photo, by actor-turned-photographer-and-middle-aged lecher John Derek.
