Soft Cover. Zustand: Fine. Circa 2012 edition. Fine facsimile softcover of the first English language edition from William Pickering - Stassin and Xavier of Paris and New York. Translated from the original Danish into English verse. 1845 date at title page and introduction. Dedicated by permission to H. M. the King of Denmark. Large, 6 1/2" x 9 1/2" design. Beige wraps w/several color bars, cover and spine titles, light shelf wear. Pages fine. Bind fine. Near fine softcover. Part of the Hard Press Classics Series of facsimile printings of hard to find and rare books. Arranged in thirty cantos, this epic poem is a lyrical tale of the ancient Nordic gods. Adam Gottlob Oehlenschläger (14 November 1779 - 20 January 1850) was a Danish poet and playwright. He introduced romanticism into Danish literature. No Danish writer before 1870 has exercised so wide an influence as Oehlenschläger. His great work was to awaken in the breasts of his countrymen an enthusiasm for the poetry and religion of their ancestors, and this he performed to so complete an extent that his name remains synonymous with Scandinavian romance. In 1829 he was publicly crowned with laurel as the "king of Nordic poetry" and the "Scandinavian King of Song" (by Bishop Esaias Tegnér, who would be his Swedish parallel) in the cathedral of Lund, Sweden, based on a vast production of poetry, theatre plays and prose. He was inspired by many including Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Gottlieb Fichte, and Friedrich von Schelling. Includes contents of the cantos, a glossary of Norse gods, a preface by W. E. Frye, the letter of gratitude by Frye to the King of Denmark, and a twenty-one page Notes and Elucidations section. Frye also published translations from German and Swedish, as well as translating from Danish to French and German to Italian. 372 pages. Insured post. Size: 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" Tall.…

Brown's collection of shells is now held by the Kelvingrove Museum in Glasgow. 4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. The text of the letter is on the verso of the last leaf and recto of the first, with the central two pages each carrying a neat list, in double column, the first of 'Bivalves' and the second of 'Univalves'. Pinned at the head of the first page of the letter is an advertisement cut from a newspaper, reading: 'A DANISH COLLECTOR OF SHELLS | wishes to exchange Fine Specimens of Land and Freshwater Shells from Denmark, with Specimens from England and other places. Refer to DR. O. A. L. MORCH, Zoological Museum, Copenhagen.' Brown expresses his willingness to 'exchange specimens', explaining: 'The locality in which I chiefly reside is not very favourable for Collecting Land & freshwater mollusca but I spend a few days yearly in dredging and collecting on our Western Coasts and I append (overleaf) a rough note of the Larger Species which I can supply from my cabinet at all times - this list could, I think, in the course of the coming Summer be nearly doubled chiefly by the addition of the smaller species such as Eulina Skenea, Montacuta, Odostomia, Utriculus, etca.' He offers to send 'a parcel such as indicated by this list'. At the foot of the second page of the letter is a third list, this one of 'some of the water species obtainable in this neighbourhood which I usually can supply'.…

Full subtitle: 'With a comparative review of the systems proposed by H. Cranmer Phillipps, R.N. and by Captain Levin Joergen Rohde, of the Royal Danish Navy, Knight of the Dannebrog, &c. &c.' The letter was previously attached by four small pieces of red sealing wax on the verso of its blank second leaf to the title-page of the pamphlet. Letter and pamphlet are now detached, with traces of wax adhering to both, but not affecting the text of either. LETTER: 12mo, one page. Good on aged paper. Addressed to Sir William Symonds (1782-1856), Surveyor of the Navy, naval architect and rear admiral. He troubled Symonds the previous summer with 'a book upon naval signals'. 'The appearance of another work upon the same subject has induced me to write the accompanying little tract, which perhaps you may find time to glance over. I am only anxious for a fair trial of my system.' PAMPHLET: octavo, thirty pages. Several illustrations of flags. Disbound. Aged and creased. Cropped ownership inscription of 'W. Symonds R.N.' at head of title. The pamphlet performs 'the disagreeable, and perhaps somewhat invidious task, of pointing out the more prominent defects in Captain Rohdes' system', and contrasts it with 'his own plan', ending with four pages of 'NUMERAL SIGNALS. [.] The Numbers to be shewn over A WHEFT.'.…
