Hardcover. Zustand: Fair. No Jacket. First edition. The first three volumes of this magazine, which famously employed Edgar Allan Poe starting in 1839. This is the first three volumes. Curiously, the third volume contain's Burton's blistering review of Poe's only novel, Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym. In a lengthy review, Burton called it an "impudent attempt at humbugging the public." Poe had published it anonymously. One wonders if the subject ever came up between the two men when Poe was hired the following year. Full leather covers with chipped spines. Endpapers darkened, and cracked at hinges. Textblocks generally sound. These early Burton volumes rarely turn up in any condition.…

Black cloth, titles stamped in gilt on the spine, elaborate decorations in blind on the covers and spine, gilt edges, pale yellow endpapers. Edges rubbed, spine head chipped, gift inscription on a blank preliminary and owner signature on the title page, foxing to leaves, plates and tissue guards age toned. Burton was an English actor and theatre manager who emigrated to Philadelphia in 1834. In 1837 he established Burton's Gentleman's Magazine inspired by the eponymous English review and had a stormy relationship with his editor Edgar Allan Poe. The selections in this volume, many by Burton, conform to that magazine's features: fiction and essays often with sporting subjects such as hunting, and poetry by Charles West Thomson. …

The December 1839 issue of Burton's; appears to have been excerpted from a contemporary omnibus, as it is preceded by the title page and contents list from a Volume V compilation of July-December. No covers. Contains the first-ever appearance of Edgar Allan Poe's 'The Conversation of Eiros and Charmion.' Stained and edgeworn. Threadbound; threads intact. The fore-half of pages 327-328 is torn out, as is the bottom fore-edge corner of pages 331-332, with loss to text. The final leaf, with pages 333-334, is missing. Poe's contribution is in pages 321-323 and is complete.…
