This book showcases selections from the author's writings on themes ranging from literature to law, with a focus on religious themes that were dominant in the Victorian literary milieu of the mid-19th century. Its chapters analyze the works of figures such as Tennyson and George Eliot, and trace the literary and artistic influences upon them. The book includes the author's famous essay, "The Stone Mason of Cromarty," in which he argues for the recognition of skilled working-class writers as scholars and critics. The author draws on his own humble beginnings to provide a nuanced perspective, showcasing the intellectual ability that could be found outside of traditional academic circles.
