While the title page states 1984, as does the copyright page, this is the first hardcover printing that includes an index, making this the re…ally a first edition, thus; as it includes new material (an index). Additionally it notes the author's year of death (1987) despite all else appearing to be a 1984 printing. Needless to say, this title is super-rare in hardcover and DJ. Both book and DJ are fine and in seemingly unread condition. "Dean of Afro-American Composers," Still, was the first American composer to have an opera produced by the New York City Opera. Known primarily for his first symphony, Afro-American Symphony (1930), which was the most widely performed symphony composed by an American up until 1950. Still composed nearly two hundred works, including five symphonies, four ballets, nine operas, and over thirty choral works; as well as being part of the Harlem Renaissance. Fine/Fine; rare in hardcover with DJ.

Clean and VG+ to Near Fine in its charming pictorial boards, with very light soiling along the rear panel and light, innocuous creasing along several of the page edges. Tall, thin quarto, Mason's highly-skilled black-and-white illustrations thruout.
