Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book is an update to the system of shorthand known as "Pitmanic" shorthand. It discusses the concept of legibility versus brevity in shorthand, arguing that due to improvements made to shorthand over the years in order to include more phonetic detail and information, the Pitman system had become less useful in recording speech because it took more time to write each word. The author posits that a system of shorthand can be created that is both legible and brief at the same time. The author of this text, W.H. Barlow, believed his shorthand system improved upon the existing Pitman system and allowed for a greater level of efficiency and brevity in writing. Barlow's system was created with the intention of including the advantages of connective vowel systems with the brevity of non-connective vowel systems, and it accomplishes this with a series of horizontal vowel strokes which add variety to the consonant outline without sacrificing brevity. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Extracted from a larger bound volume. GOOD condition. The plates have some foxing; the text is crisp and bright. Barlow investigated spikes of an unknown origin/source, unexpected deflections in the magnetic needle in telegraphs on the Midland Railway and set to work figuring out what was going on. It turns out that he makes a significant inroad into earth's magnetism and geomagnetically induced currents by showing that the deflections were caused naturally by the Earth rather than faulty machinery.…
