Neatly inked title to front free endpaper, and name to rear free endpaper (both dated 1812). Complete with the engraved frontis and four further plates, numerous woodcuts within the text. First issued in 1761 by celebrated children's publisher John Newbery, authorship is generally attributed to Newbery, possibly with input from Oliver Goldsmith. This is the second printing of the revised and expanded 'New Edition', and the 9th edition overall. A popular children's educator, the book remained in print until the end of the 1830s. A very crisp text block of an early childrens science book. Morocco label present but safely loosely enclosed within the text block. The bookplate of Esther Acklom with a gift inscription to her at the head of the reverse of the frontis. Given by The Rev. Ingram 1797. Esther Acklom of Wiseton Hall married the Viscount Althorp who became the third Earl Spencer.
