Drawings for advertisements on pages 241 and 242 might be Spratling's as well for they are stylistically similar to a signed advertisement drawing on page 240. Spratling is listed/photographed among the Sophomore Class Roll on page 85 (with uncaptioned photo on page 84 in which Spratling is indistinguishable), among the Company G privates on page 118 (with uncaptioned photo on page 119 in which Spratling is indistinguishable), among the Architectural Society member list on page 201 (with uncaptioned photo but with Spratling appearing in the top row), among a group of photographs of Wirt Literary Society members on page 213, and among the Auburn Press Club on page 223. Spratling was involved in the arts scene in New Orleans in the 1920s and later moved to Mexico to become a silversmith, and established a base in Taxco. He is frequently referred to as founder of the 20th century Mexican silver jewelry industry. Softcover paper portfolio with front cover label, four pages of text with map, and ten separate pages with Spratling's drawings engraved by the Grelle-Egerton Engraving Company. Housed in a blue cloth portfolio with front cover label and marbled interior. The book is in poor condition with covers chipped, soiled and separated from one another, text very good, sketch pages with light intermittent foxing, edgewear and some waviness to the lower edges of several toward the end. Dark gray paper boards; front board features blue stamped lettering and mildly soiled centerpiece paste-on b/w Paris vignette; spine paper creased with small chips at ends. Text block still firmly bound by its original four staples but staples have detached from the inner spine leaving the text block just laid-in (a frequent fault to this rather fragile book). Strong toning to front free endpaper recto and rear free endpaper verso; some foxing occurs to interior leaves. Ten pencil illustrations by Spratling appear among the book's six brief chapters on drawing technique. Chapters titled as follows: PENCILS AND PAPER; MASSES AND PLANES; LINE; VALUES AND RENDERING; COMPOSITION; and INDICATION AND THE SKETCH. The ten drawings, apparently completed during Spratling's 1923 European trip, feature various French buildings and scenes. PENCIL DRAWING was Spratling's first published book and was intended as a textbook for his drafting students at Tulane's School of Architecture. With class enrollment being quite small, the book probably had a very limited printing - certainly no more than a few hundred copies. Although the book's official title as specified upon both the title page and the front board is PENCIL DRAWING, Spratling referred to the book as THE ART OF PENCIL DRAWING in his 1967 autobiography FILE ON SPRATLING (see page 34).
