Paperback, xi, 359 pp.; 23 cm; illustrated with black-and-white photographs, portraits and a map of the Diocese of Baker. Foreword by Msgr. Matthew M. Crotty, J.C.D. In Very Good condition. History of the Catholic Church in Oregon east of the Cascades, written over ten years of retirement by Monsignor William Stone (b. 1916), a priest of the Diocese of Baker born in Athena and raised in The Dalles. Going beyond the two earlier diocesan histories by Father Dominic O'Connor (1928) and Msgr. Patrick Gaire (1966), Stone follows the lay people, religious Sisters, priests and bishops who built the Church across two-thirds of the state, from the first Mass at Fort Walla Walla and the missions of Blanchet, Demers and DeSmet through the founding of the Diocese of Baker in 1903 to the early 1990s. Includes the parishes of The Dalles, Canyon City, Bend, Heppner, Hood River, Klamath Falls and other towns; the career of Father Louis Lambert Conrardy, who nursed Father Damien on Molokai and later earned a medical degree at the University of Oregon; the Extension Society chapel cars; the 1953 golden jubilee; and the 1990 ordination of Charles Graves, the first married man ordained a Roman Catholic priest in Oregon. Dedicated to Bishop Francis P. Leipzig. Ends with a portrait gallery of diocesan clergy active c. 1993, notes, bibliography and index. This 1993 printing has no ISBN; a later 1994 printing carries ISBN 0964201607.…

In den WarenkorbOctavo, gold boards (hardcover), gilt letters and illustration to upper cover, 150 pp. Very Good+ in a Very Good dust jacket with sunned spine and light edgewear. From dust jacket: Tetua, the old bard of Tahiti, holds within his mind and heart a wealth of tales of a bygone age, a time when his island home had not yet felt the hurried pace of the white man upon its shores. Stone first used Tetua as narrator of Polynesian legends in The Ship of Flame. The stories he tells, handed down through the generations by word of mouth, are to him as familiar and comforting as old friends. Nothing affords Tetua a better opportunity to tell the legends of his people than the appearance of a visitor to his home of the shores of Matavai Bay. In Idylls of the South Seas the readers hares with Tetua the exciting accounts of the gods, heroes, rulers, and lovers of ancient Tahiti and its neighboring islands. Maui's brave efforts to complete his Eighth Great Quest; grim, man-eating Nona-of-the-Long-Teeth and the story of the young lovers who must escape from her; Tafai's journey to the underworld to save his father; Vei's battle with the Dragons of the Dark River -- these ancient legends are brought to life for the modern reader. Hawaii, Literature, Mythology, Traditional Tales, Folklore, Americana yslic.…
