The book reviews the mechanization of the harvesting process in the past fifty years, wherein the combined harvester has rendered the binder and stationary thresher obsolete due to its greater efficiency, speed, and lower labor needs. It also discusses the history of bulk handling of grain on the East Coast and in other parts of the world, demonstrating its clear superiority to sack-bag methods. The author provides detailed cost analyses for harvesting with both sack and bulk methods, and demonstrates that there is a clear cost benefit and reduced grain loss for using the bulk method. The book also summarizes the opinions of farmers, agricultural experts, warehousemen, and shipping professionals, all of whom support the adoption of bulk handling for efficiency and cost-saving reasons. The author concludes that the change to bulk handling is inevitable as the economies of scale, reduced labor needs, and increased efficiency will lead to lower consumer prices in the long term.
